History of the HMV Model 101 The only blemish on this HMV is some scuffs on the body and a broken crank retainer bracket (shown in photo 9) The model 101 HMV portable Gramophone was available between October 1925 and circa 1931. This is the early HMV 101 design with the winding handle on the front. In late 1926 / early 1927 the handle was moved to the side.
It is extremely rare to find this early model with the winding handle on the front. When Collectors say that they own an HMV 101 the winding handle is almost always on the side. The part that holds the Needle is called the Soundbox, the brass backed No. 4 Soundbox on this Gramophone is identified on the front; identification was moved to the rear of the Soundbox late 1926.
