WWI ERA BRITISH P1907 BAYONET. It was found with some other British WWI era field gear items. This very rare British Pattern 1907 Hooked Quillon bayonet was one of the very first P1907's manufactured being made by the Enfield factory in October 1908.

The blade retains it's original small area of bluing just below the crossguard (see photos). Blade remains mostly bright overall with some areas of light spotting (see photos).

It shows average/light use/wear, appears lightly sharpened long ago and doesn't have much of a sharp edge now. Pommel, crossguard & backstrap retain some original finish but they are beginning to brown (see photos). Oil darkened walnut wood grips fit well, are clean/solid overall and are secured with original screws (see photos). Spring loaded release button is present at the pommel and works perfectly.

Pommel to is unit marked MX which I believe is the 57th Foot, the Duke of Cambridges Own Middlesex Regiment (see photos). The bayonet's leather bodied scabbard is very clean/solid overall and is the early pattern with blued standard top mount and the rare internal bottom mount that is fully covered by the scabbard leather excepting the oval tip (see photos). A 1915 dated canvas frog was found with the associated field gear and is included with the bayonet (see photos).

All British Pattern 1907 bayonets manufactured prior to 1914 were originally constructed with a hooked quillon. The quillon was intended to break an opponents bayonet in combat.

Early on it proved to be ineffective and was withdrawn from use at the beginning of 1914 with the vast majority of early bayonets being recalled to have the hook removed. Really a very clean, exceptionally rare estate bayonet that shows only light/average use/wear. Great opportunity to add a bayonet to a combat gear collection or to display with the appropriate rifle.

Hard to find a better example of an original hooked quillon British P1907 bayonet. In over 50 years of collecting militaria this is only the second one I have come across.
