Elizabeth I, Battle of Turnhout, 1597, Anglo-Dutch victory, silver jeton, rare; of contemporary manufacture in Dodrecht, Netherlands. An important engagement of the Anglo-Spanish War and the Eighty Years War, in the Battle of Turnout of 24 January 1597, a force of 4000 Spanish troops was defeated by a larger Anglo-Dutch army under Prince Maurice of Nassau and Francis Vere, with vast casualties on the Spanish side of over 2000 killed and wounded; only 12 of the Anglo-Dutch troops were killed, with approximately 50 wounded. The success was celebrated by a series of medals as well as a dramatization on the London stage, and Francis Vere was widely celebrated in England, receiving a personal commendation from Elizabeth I.
